Stretch Your Body (As Well as Your Mind): Looking After Your Health While Travelling
Whether you are heading on a road trip or staying in one place, your health is always important but it is easy to neglect when you are on the road. While travelling is medicine for the soul, it can take its toll. So how can we look after our mind, body, and spirit?
Know Where the Emergency Rooms Are
It is so important to know where the emergency room is, even if you have a minor medical condition under control. At the same time, you need to know the best specialists for common ailments that come out of nowhere. You don’t want something like a toothache to hamper your journey and knowing where a general dentist is in each destination is going to help you look after yourself. We might be having a lot of fun, but we also need to prepare for the unknown. Little medical emergencies can put a dampener on our entire experience, so just make a note of where the medical help is.
Know Your Physical Limitations
While travelling is a great way to get fit and healthy, there is such a thing as overtraining. If you are someone that is not a gym regular, you’ve got to be aware of how much you can physically do during the course of a day. It’s important to listen to your body but at the same time, realise that if you do enough travelling, this could put you in the best physical health you’ve ever been! This is why you need to make sure you feed yourself with the right foods. As tempting as it is to eat everything you see, it’s always a good idea to hit the food stalls that provide energising meals. There are always street food markets that will give you meals full of healthy carbohydrates, vegetables, and protein.
Detoxify from the Digital World
The temptation to get as many Instagram snaps as possible is always there, but are you doing it too much? If you are travelling around less developed countries, you may see the people are happier with fewer possessions. Give yourself an opportunity to boost your mind and soul and switch the phone off. You may find that you look further up and out than you did before.
Get Some Sleep!
You might think that there’s no time to sleep because there is so much to do. But you cannot underestimate the importance of a good night’s sleep when you’re travelling. Regardless of the destination, it’s important to get enough sleep so you can enjoy what you’re doing, rather than feeling awake in time to leave. You might go on a whirlwind city break, but if you don’t feel awake enough to enjoy it, it’s going to make you feel worse when you return home. Instead, think about the best ways to recharge your batteries by picking a comfy hotel, and making sure that you give yourself time to unwind at the end of the day.
Of course, we’re all up for a great holiday, but we must remember that our health shouldn’t suffer either!
How do you look after your health while travelling? Drop me a line or two as always.
Learning to protect ourselves at all times includes more than just awareness. Thanks for reminding us to keep our bodies tuned for our own health and safety.
You’re welcome. It’s all too easy to get consumed in the beauty of a destination and sometimes let our health slip.
Good words of encouragement, Bola. I try and do some stretching exercises every evening and I think they do help tone the body quite well.
Thanks Doreen. Stretching in the evening sounds great. I tend to stretch mostly in the mornings and forget about the evenings. Let’s keep this going 🙂
