Taking Care of Your Teeth: Everything You Need to Know
When you first take a look at someone, the chances are the first thing you notice about them will be their teeth – as people tend to smile at each when they first meet. This of course means that many of us are conscious about our teeth and we are searching for ways to brighten and straighten our smiles. Giving our set of pearly whites the best possible appearance. Now, it’s important to be aware that a Hollywood smile isn’t essential. Your natural teeth are just fine. But if you do want to make the most of your teeth and give yourself a well aligned and white smile, you can follow a few of the tips below:
Maintaining a Proper Cleaning Regime
The first step that you need to take seriously when it comes to taking care of your teeth is maintaining a proper cleaning regime. It’s no secret that professionals think we should clean our teeth twice a day, for around two minutes each time. This is something we are told time and time again when we were growing up and something that was instilled in most of us.
But if you find that you regularly neglect cleaning your teeth twice a day, this is something you need to rectify as soon as possible. Make sure that you clean your teeth to this schedule and that you clean for long enough, rather than cutting your cleaning short.
You may also want to use an electric toothbrush, as this is more likely to ensure thorough cleaning. Plus, it’s recommended that you use a fluoride toothpaste, floss and mouthwash too! You may even want to try interdental cleaners to remove any food or plaque that may have got caught or built up between your molars.
Visit Your Dentist
The next most important step for a healthy smile is to make sure that you visit your dentist once every six months. While many of us believe that once a year is sufficient, once every six months is generally better. During this appointment, your dentist will be able to take a proper look around your mouth, identifying any problems such as gum disease or tooth decay. They will then be able to recommend treatment that will help with any dental problems. If work needs to be carried out – for example, fillings, root canals, or wisdom tooth removal – they’ll be able to carry this out for you. On top of this, dentists will be able to recommend aesthetic treatments, like smile design. This can help to straighten teeth, brighten and whiten teeth, or carry out any other changes you might want made to your smile.
A Note on Home Treatments
While home treatments may be tempting due to their lower price tag, they’re generally best avoided. Home treatments can easily go wrong, causing issues such as tooth sensitivity or discolouration. Stick with the dentist where possible, as professionals are much more likely to give the results you’re looking for.
Of course, dental hygiene is key to maintaining a healthy smile. So, this needs to be prioritised. But once you have this under control, there are a number of different treatments that you might want to carry out to further alter your smile!
